From our 15+ years of experience with bullmastiffs, our understanding of the breed may vary with others’ experiences. We have observed loyal, caring, intelligent dogs. For us, our dogs are well socialized, so they have been very friendly with guests, small children, and other small pets that we have. Our bullmastiffs have had a life expectancy averaging 11 1/2 years which is longer than the breeds’ average life expectancy. It is important that each adopter do their own research and have an understanding of their own for the breed before making the decision of adopting.
Bullmastiffs are big couch potatoes that need a strong leader or they’ll become the leader of the pack and be very stubborn. They have big personalities and do best as an inside dog that is very much part of the family. They don’t do well being alone; it’s not their nature. They’re people pleasers and need to have companionship with their persons. Due to their large size and shorter muzzle, they shouldn’t be left in the sun or outside without shade for too long as they will overheat.
